The Shakers have been and continue to be leaders in the world of furniture making and simple utilitarian living. Their function over form design policy still manages to produce some of the most beautiful pieces I've ever seen and if you look at almost any contemporary design company you will find elements of the Shaker influence shining through. In a world where we perpetually fill our homes with frivolous luxurys it's refreshing to know that there is a way of life that manages to take care of all your needs without sacrificing atmosphere or beauty.
Today me, my brother, and his dog Memphis took a trip out to Vashon Island. The weather couldn't have been more perfect out there. We spent a good long time cruising around the beach, letting Memshis drag every stick he could find back to some secret hiding place. Before heading out to the beach though, we stopped off at Vashon Island Coffee Roasters which is arguably the best cup of coffee in the northwest. You buy a cup in the store and then head out to the front porch where you can choose from a couple different blends. It was pretty much the perfect way to spend a Sunday before going back to work.
