Stephen O'Malley

via Ideologic To be honest, graphic design is pretty much lost on me these days. There has been such a flood of generic nonsense over the years that it's hard to get excited about any of it. Fortunately, we still have Mr. Stephen O'Malley. He's best known for his role in bands SunnO))), Aethenor, and Khanate as well as many other obscure side projects. His design aesthetic mirrors the sounds and feelings that each of these projects invoke. With an extremely minimalist approach he is able to conjure up visions of religion, history, and nature as well as those things we all associate with dark metal music like death,lucifer, and the occult. At the end of the day though, it comes off as less creepy/scary and more like intellectual high art. Beautifully executed images that I'm thankful to have around.

Crow House

Henry Varnum Poor (1887-1970) was somewhat of a renaissance man in the art world mastering the areas of painting,sculpture,architecture, and even pottery. These are a few images of Crow House in New City, NY that he built for himself  starting in 1920 and finishing in 1949. All of the materials used in the house, wood,stone, etc., were harvested from the land it is built on. An amazing example of craftsmanship and self sufficiency. Allison Schulnik

via Allison Schulnik I'm not horribly in touch with contemporary artists these days but this woman really kills it. It's nice to see somebody using good old fashion paint and brush to make pictures. She also makes claymation vidoes that are strangely intense and beautiful.  

Best Made Co.

via Design Work Life Only in New York can you get away with starting a company based around axes with fruity painted handles and leather slings that make you look like Robin Hood. But, that's exactly what Best Made Co. has done. Despite their flamboyant appearance the axes are actually quite substantial in their construction. 35" (depending on the size you order) of Appalachian Hickory and 4lbs of 5160 high carbon US steel. Definitely tough enough to get any job done whether you're just chopping firewood at your upstate hideaway or dismembering a noisy neighbor.  

Bailey Hunter Robinson
